“My people do not know” #892

“Even the stork in the heavens knows her appointed times; And the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow observe the time of their coming. But My people do not know the judgment of the Lord.” (Jeremiah 8:7, NKJV)

The migratory patterns of birds were set by their Creator. They instinctively acknowledge His rule and obediently come and go on course. The annual return of the swallows of San Juan Capistrano remind us of the Creator’s precision and of His creatures’ compliance to His will. Yet, during the life of Jeremiah, the people of God were living as if they were unaware of the Lord’s judgment against their sin. They considered themselves wise while they fully rejected the word of the Lord (Jer. 8:8-9). They were not at all ashamed of their grievous sins against Him, and would indeed fall in the day of their punishment (Jer. 8:10-12). Some Christians have forgotten their God and His righteous judgment of sin. They live as if they are immune to His judgment, even though none of us are (2 Cor. 5:10). Every one of us should take a lesson from the fowl of the air, and obey our Creator’s will with punctuality and perseverance.
